Here we go again

So, a 3-0 loss to Florida. Glad to see the season is already ruined. I’ve gleaned from the scoresheet and the 45 seconds of highlights from TSN that I might as well give up already: The Flames can’t score against Florida, the new uniforms look ridiculous as a total package, and they’re still using that really ugly scorebug on the Jumbotron at the Saddledome (and presumably also on Flames PPV.) KILL ME NOW.

OK, so I’m issuing my reaction from Toronto. But I look forward to local reports from walkinvisible, MetroGnome and Leanne — especially on the performances from some of the prospects. A look at the rosters shows a lot of youth (and Owen Nolan joining Robyn Regehr and Stephane Yelle wearing an A). The crowd I’m most interested in hearing about: Dustin Boyd, Tim Ramholt and Kris Chucko. The first two seem like they might have legitimate shots to make the team; the last, well, I’d love to hear there’s something there, but it sounds like both he and Eric Nystrom are going to join Jesper Mattson and Nicklas Sundblad in the Flames First Round Bust Hall-of-Fame.

This is a tough time of year to not be in Calgary. As good as reports from my fellow bloggers have been, and though I can gather some information from the muckraking Calgary hockey media (I’m not really sure what this story is about), nothing beats being there, and Centre Ice doesn’t cover the pre-season.

A few other notes:

Kiprusoff to re-sign? The fact that ongoing negotiations being talked about and reported on is good news as far as I’m concerned. I just don’t see a new deal not happening — the official dialogue seems solid (“I’d love to be here“), and it’s just too obvious that without Kipper, this team isn’t a Cup contender anytime soon.

Keenan. I was talking to a Leafs fan yesterday, and he said very seriously that “the Leafs will never win the Stanley Cup. The media here is just too crazy, and the players can’t win in this atmosphere.” I responded very seriously that what the Leafs needed to get past that is a coach who can take most of the attention — “pay Scotty Bowman $10 million just to coach,” I suggested — and a legitimate, no questions asked superstar who can yank the rest and just let the team play. Then I realized the Flames have both of these things in Keenan and Iginla, and a veteran core in the dressing room that likely won’t let Keenan walk all over the players — good situation, right? I still say recent history is so sketch around Coach Mike that this is too big a risk, especially when Darryl could have just gone back behind the bench himself. But I’m feeling more optimistic by the day.

Then again, even thinking about this when the season is about to begin is kind of pointless. We all know what’s going to happen: If the Flames win, Keenan’s a genius. If they lose, he’s gone.

Taratukhin takes off. It’s disappointing that he’s joined Mark Giordano back in Russia, but samesies on my thoughts: It’s just a disappointment, not a killer. He was going to be a part-time, fourth-line player at best this season. My guess is he’s back trying to make the team next year, and this year the Flames can develop Brandon Prust, Dustin Boyd or Flames blogger favourite David van der Gulik in that spot.

Seriously, those uniforms. Could they be more busy? Does anyone out there actually like how they’re trying to have the stripe on the side of the jersey match the stripe on the breezers? It’s going to take me a while to get accustomed to watching those things skate around the ice. They aren’t pedestal bad, but they’re pretty bad.

And with that, I’m back. It’s good to be blogging again.

  1. it’s good to HAVE you blogging again…. 🙂

    1. there are two stripes on the jersey that match with the two stripes on the breezers. together, the uniform actually doesn’t look too bad. some dudes in the stands were wearing the jersey with jeans or whatnot, and that looks ridiculous…

    2. i’ve decided that kipper will not re-sign until he knows the climate of the keenan era. think about it… fuck, i wouldn’t sign a lengthy deal if i thought i’d be miserable…

    more later.

  2. Trust me, you didn’t miss much last night. Remember how the Flames played in April last year? It was that bad + lots of rookies. The girls sitting beside me nearly fell asleep.

  3. *last year being last season, of course.
