Aucoin? Update: Yes.

Well, as expected the news is fast and furious on draft day. The Calgary Herald reports this morning that the Flames are on the verge of announcing they’ve acquired $4-million/year defenceman Adrian Aucoin from Chicago for a draft pick. Without doing the research into his numbers, injuries and general disappointing past couple of seasons, I do remember the Aucoin of old and like his two-way play. He wouldn’t be the first guy to get drowned by playing for the Hawks, and he won’t be the last. The optimist in me says a change of scenery to Calgary could revitalize his career, even at 34.

The same story claims “Alex Tanguay to the Montreal Canadiens; Alexei Kovalev to the Calgary Flames; Ryan Smyth to the Flames; Scott Gomez to the Edmonton Oilers; Wade Redden to the Oilers; Brad Richards to wherever” are also rumours flying around. I’m hoping for a fun draft night.

Meanwhile, the Flames have a fancy new website. I’ve spent about five seconds on it, but the index page is better than its predecessor.

UPDATE, 4:22 p.m. eastern: It’s confirmed, the price being Zyuzin (bye-bye, Andrea!) and a 6-2 defence prospect named Steve Marr who had four points in 34 games in Omaha last season, and will likely now become the next Nicklas Lidstrom.

  1. Sigh. It’s still a graphic designer’s nightmare… I’ll get used to it, I guess. And I do like that the league is pushing a standardized format to make everybody’s sites more consistent.

  2. Zyuzin for Aucoin, is what I’m hearing. Aucoin will have to be pretty terrible or pretty injured for this not to be an upgrade.

  3. Wow, if that’s true that’s amazing. Getting rid of Susan would be an unexpected bonus, and cover off the $1.5 million too much the Flames would be paying for Andrea.

  4. The only problem is that Ecklund reported we’re getting Smytty. At least we don’t have to wonder anymore, we definately won’t be getting him.

  5. I seriously wonder how Ecklund still has a job… insider my ass… wait, that doesn’t sound right…

  6. Eklund’s still going because people still visit his site. That’s all. Say what you want about him, he draws a crowd and that’s all that matters online.

Dudes here at work are making fun of the “washed-up” Aucoin acquisition. Meanwhile, Leafs fans are rejoicing about Toskala … and what about this Kubina to Minnesota rumour? Has JFJ finally grown up?

  7. The more I think about the Aucoin trade, the more I like it… and Duncan, given your experiences over the Keenan thing, I think the guys at work are just twisting your tail.

You need to make some friends with Oilers fans, that’s what you need to do!
